我以前也做过建筑翻译，是从一个一窍不通的英语专业毕业生做起的。这类翻译的文件无非是以下几类：一是产品说明书，比如说一种新型涂料面市，对它的功能、原料、注意事项等的说明；二是一些施工规范(可能是业主出具的，也可能是政府机构的)，也就是要工人做到的一些技术标准，比如一种防水工程，从选料、如何操作、防水膜的厚度、保质期等的说明，让工人除了图纸外有个更明确的底；三是一些投标书或公司情况说明，比如公司的规模、设备情况、拥有人员等，给业主做参考的；最后就是一些合同了，规定各方所履行的责任和义务，以及违约罚款等。产品说明书和施工规范难度较大，需要对所学的科目有基本的了解，比如防水涂料，你要知道防水施工、材料等等的大概了解，至少知道一些东西用工程术语怎么说吧，这样翻译出来的东西人家才能听懂，所以做这些翻译时首先就要找这方面的资料来学习，自己先要深入了解，才有可能提供给人家满意的译作。标书或合同相比较简单一些，技术含量低一点，跟其他行业的合同或标书难不了多少，最多是一些建筑业的词汇，很容易上手的。
用多少时间胜任这个工作很难说，工程的现实性很强，当时我是直接在现场的，有图纸可以看，有样品可以观摩，有现场的工程师可以给你解释技术上的东西，所以我记得快，可以很快上手。而现在是兼职，很大程度上是“纸上谈兵”，很多化学名词你除非有过现场经历，对其性能或用过有亲眼目睹，否则需不需要记，能记多久就很难说了。而且工程所覆盖的项目极多（举个例子说，我当时在的一个房建项目，涉及：空调安装，防水，钢筋，抹灰，砌砖，打混凝土，吊顶，管道，电线，铝合金窗，走廊栏杆，墙壁涂料，木门，垃圾道，停车场标志，火警器，电梯，游泳池，等等），每一个项目都有很厚的属于自己的技术规范，很多东西你如果没有亲临现场很难保证有令人满意的译作，技术专业性强，简单例子：“地锚”，是什么东西？能看出它与英文单词“pigtail”联系起来吗？你不到现场看过，怎么能知道它其实是用来支撑挡土墙模板的一个部件呢？再如，“false ceiling”，什么意思？老外就是在图纸上这样标着，你译成“假天棚”？咱工程师能看懂吗？只有看了图纸的图示，去现场看了，才知道，哦，它是指“石膏吊顶”。所以说要多长时间胜任，你首先要选好自己感兴趣的几个项目，然后多多揽一些翻译活来练手，积累词汇和经验，最好能有一些图纸看看，能到一些施工现场考察，问问工程师。这样才能尽快胜任起来。我当年做这个全职的，少说都用2、3年时间。不过这个职业我还是看好的，因为很多建筑公司不是纷纷拓展海外业务了嘛，到时这方面的翻译还是挺紧手的，你如果这方面是能手，到时说不准那家海外公司就看上你了，到时在外面做全职就真正是“财源滚滚”了。但目前关键是，混出“经验”来！
